      Let's Talk Shoes

      From MY Feet to Yours

By Uli, Head Trainer at Forever Active

      Welcome to this week’s Friday-Fix!

As someone who spends a lot of time on my feet—leading group sessions, working one-on-one with clients, and squeezing in my own training—I can’t overstate how important proper footwear is. It’s not just about style or brand loyalty; the right pair of shoes truly changes how we move, how we feel, and how well we bounce back the next day.

As we age, our feet go through subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) changes. The fat padding thins, tendons lose elasticity, and issues like plantar fasciitis or bunions can start to show up uninvited. That’s why I always tell our clients at Forever Active: if you're going to splurge on anything fitness-related, let it be shoes. A well-chosen pair is like a good training partner—supportive, reliable, and able to carry you through the hard stuff.

What I Look For in a Shoe

Here’s what I personally pay attention to when choosing a training shoe, and what I recommend to my clients—especially those over 40:

Arch Support: Flattening arches are common as we get older. A supportive shoe helps keep alignment in check and reduces unnecessary strain on the knees and hips.

Cushioning: Whether you’re doing strength training or simply walking the seawall, cushioning can reduce joint stress and improve comfort.

Stability: A firm heel counter and a stable base can help prevent rolled ankles and improve balance—particularly important for lateral movements.

Breathability: Our feet sweat more than we think! Breathable materials help prevent blisters and fungal infections.

Fit: Get your feet professionally measured at least once a year. Our feet can and do change over time.

      My Shoe Story

While I’ve loved the Adidas Court Shoe in the past for its comfort and all-around support, I’m currently putting the Cloud X 4 by On Running through its paces—and I have to say, the results so far are fantastic.

This shoe feels incredibly light, yet supportive. It transitions beautifully between activities and keeps up with my every move—whether I’m coaching or getting in a session of my own. No, this isn’t a paid plug—I just really believe in passing along what works.

      Where to Shop Smart

If you’re in the Vancouver area, I always send people to Rackets & Runners. Their team understands foot mechanics and can help match you with the right shoe for your body and goals. Especially if you're training regularly or recovering from foot or joint issues, having a knowledgeable fitter makes a world of difference.

So next time you’re lacing up for a workout, ask yourself: Are these shoes working for me or against me? Support your feet, and they’ll support you right back—through your workouts, your walks, and all the adventures life has in store.

Let’s step forward together, one step at a time.

      Take care,

      Uli
